    The Challenge of Intangible Value

Quantifying the value of a community is a perennial challenge for managers, particularly when dealing with advocacy and community-led growth. At London Community Week 2025, the speaker addressed the difficulty of measuring "emotional" and "intangible" factors that represent a brand's health but don't always appear on a spreadsheet.

This is especially true in advocacy work, where success is often felt through brand sentiment and community "buzz" rather than raw ticket counts. To combat the pressure of "vanity metrics" like GitHub stars, the speaker recommended a dual-track approach to reporting.

    Combining Data with Storytelling

To present a comprehensive picture of success to stakeholders, community professionals should blend quantitative metrics with qualitative narratives. Numbers provide the scale, but stories provide the context that makes the value undeniable.

    • Quantitative: Use cohort data to show retention and specific user actions (like introductions leading to product success).

    • Qualitative: Collect quotes, success stories, and examples of peer-to-peer support that demonstrate brand loyalty.
