Moving Beyond Support: The Evolution of Member Needs

In the quest to define community value, many organizations mistake a functional support forum for a thriving ecosystem. However, treating a community solely as a place to solve technical issues limits its potential. According to insights from HeyOrca’s strategy, support communities function like "digital bathrooms"—essential and functional, providing moments of relief or brief connection, but ultimately limited in scope.

"When you think about support communities, I need you to start thinking about them as digital bathrooms because that is what they are. They are absolutely needed... But what are you really building?"

To move beyond this transactional model, community builders can apply a framework inspired by Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs. This prevents the community from becoming a one-dimensional tool and instead turns it into a platform for member well-being and self-actualization.
