The Infinity Loop of Community Improvement
Successful community management is not a linear project with a start and end date; it is a continuous "infinity loop" of empathy, expansive thinking, and experimentation. Rushing to launch without this cycle often leads to significant failure and a loss of social capital. It is better to delay a launch than to present a community that has no clear value proposition or understanding of its members.
Practical Member Research
The foundation of this loop is active listening. Community managers are encouraged to engage in at least five direct conversations with members every month. These interactions should center on three simple questions focused on the member's goals and current struggles. This qualitative data, combined with extensive surveys and analytics, allows the manager to understand exactly what the audience is trying to achieve.
"We went, we did two extensive surveys. We did a lot of interviews. We talked to the people and we wanted to understand: what do they want to achieve, what are they struggling with right now?"
