Creating an Inclusive and Emotional Member Experience

The first moments a member spends in a community often dictate their long-term engagement levels. According to experts at London Community Week 2025, successful community management requires moving beyond functional checklists to prioritize "emotional onboarding" and active inclusivity.

    The Framework of Emotional Onboarding

Most onboarding processes focus on what a member should do or know . A community-centric approach asks instead: how should they feel ? The recommended strategy is to identify one to three keywords or emotions desired for the member (e.g., "safe," "inspired," or "curious") and reverse-engineer the journey. "You define them and then you try and reverse engineer this into the member journey... you can really weave the emotional outcome you want," the speaker explained.

    Dismantling Community Cliques

A welcoming culture must be vocal and active. To prevent "newbie" alienation, community leaders should facilitate introductions that bridge the gap between long-standing members (OGs) and newcomers. By explicitly asking veterans to welcome new joiners and stating "we don't do cliques here," leaders set a standard of radical inclusivity from day one.
