A Framework for Intentional Community Listening
Active listening is not a one-time event or a phase relegated to the beginning of a community’s lifecycle. Instead, it must be integrated throughout all processes and stages of development. To achieve this, community leaders can adopt a four-part toolset designed to deepen understanding and improve engagement outcomes.
The Four Tools for Effective Listening
• Listen Fully: Resisting the urge to jump straight into action or prepare a rebuttal while the other person is speaking.
• Connect with Emotions and Motivations: Looking beyond the words to understand the hopes and concerns that drive member behavior.
• Consider Phases and Formats: Tailoring the listening approach to the current stage of the community and the medium of communication.
• Commit to Constant Learning: Viewing listening as a skill that requires self-reflection and regular feedback.
"Most of the people think like listening is only at the beginning... but it's not a one-time event. It goes through all the processes."
