Your annual awards dinner is a monument to the past. It celebrates the same five people who have run the organisation for twenty years, while everyone else pays £200 for a cold chicken dinner and a chance to feel irrelevant. This isn't a member recognition program; it's a member alienation machine.
The 'Usual Suspects' Problem
Most association awards programmes are broken. They are designed, often unintentionally, to reinforce the existing hierarchy rather than to energise the entire membership. The result is a hollow ritual that generates more cynicism than engagement.
The first symptom is the 'Hall of Fame' effect. The 'Lifetime Achievement' and 'Distinguished Fellow' awards are given to board members, past presidents, and major sponsors. These are the usual suspects. While their contributions may be genuine, this narrow focus sends a clear message to the 95% of your members: 'this isn't for you'. It tells them that recognition is something you receive at the end of a long career, not something you earn through active participation today.
