A useful product practice exercise asks customers to make the decisions a real workflow requires and understand the consequences of their choices. Give them a bounded scenario, suitable sample information and a safe working environment. Provide enough support to begin, then use feedback and another attempt to develop more independent performance.
A polished demonstration can make a complicated workflow look straightforward because the presenter has already made every decision. Practice gives the learner responsibility for those choices, while there is still space to examine and correct the result.
Choose the decisions the exercise should rehearse
Start with one capability the learner should develop. A workflow may contain many steps, but the exercise needs a clear purpose. Perhaps the customer must choose a suitable approval route, investigate an unexpected output or configure a process for a stated request. Name that capability before building the scenario.
