The best member data privacy practices are rooted in ethics, not just legal compliance. They centre on three core principles: collecting only what you need, giving members full control over their information, and communicating with absolute transparency. This approach builds trust, which is the foundation of any healthy community.
Your privacy policy is probably 20 pages long. It was written by lawyers to protect the organisation from other lawyers. Nobody reads it. Yet we ask members to tick a box, confirming they have read and understood it. This is a broken ritual. It’s a compliance hoop, not a foundation for trust. Real trust is built elsewhere.
