The Bristol chapter has not held a meeting in eighteen months, but their bank account is still active. The Leeds chapter is run by a small clique that actively drives away new members at events. You know these are problems, but headquarters keeps hoping they will fix themselves. They will not.
Denial Is Not a Strategy: Acknowledging the Problem
A dysfunctional chapter is a brand liability. It actively damages your organisation’s reputation in a specific region, wastes member fees, and alienates the very people you want to attract. Ignoring it is a choice to let the damage continue. The first step is to stop pretending the problem does not exist and start diagnosing it properly.
Activity metrics alone are not enough. A chapter can host monthly events and still be profoundly unhealthy. You need a deeper, more qualitative assessment. Consultant Bill Sims popularised the idea of a 'Chapter Health Assessment Tool', a concept that moves beyond simple reporting to measure the true vitality of a chapter. You can build a simple version yourself.
