Your code of conduct is a list of rules for when things go wrong. It is the fire extinguisher in a glass box on the wall. But what are you doing to prevent the fire in the first place? An inclusive community is not built on rules that prevent bad behaviour, but on rituals that actively encourage and amplify good behaviour.
Why Your Code of Conduct is a Defensive Document
Let’s be clear. You need a code of conduct. It is a non-negotiable requirement for any professional space, online or off. It sets expectations, defines harassment, and provides a mechanism for reporting violations. It is a vital piece of legal and ethical infrastructure.
But it is also the absolute minimum. A code of conduct is a defensive document. It tells people what not to do. It draws a line in the sand. It is fundamentally reactive, designed to be invoked only when a boundary has already been crossed and harm has already occurred.
