Design customer training around a task the learner can perform, the conditions in which they will perform it and the quality required. Replace broad promises to understand a product with observable actions. Then choose explanations and practice that help customers complete that work, rather than organising lessons around everything the product can do.
A customer can finish a lesson and still be unsure what to do when faced with a real request. Clear objectives give the designer, subject specialist and learner a shared answer to a practical question: what should this training make possible?
Start with a customer task rather than a topic
A topic names an area of knowledge; a task names work someone needs to complete. Reporting is a topic. Producing a report that a team can use to review a particular activity is a task. Begin with the work because it gives the training a purpose that can guide design choices.
