How did you start into community management? What was your career path across the years?

My career path started in Australia while studying at university, a degree in events, tourism and marketing. My first job was in hospitality and then I progressed into event management as a Conference Manager, managing hotel conference departments. You could say my career path has always been centred around people and bringing them together.

I then moved to London in 2014 (16,264 away from home) where I found the world of trade marketing, here I honed my skills in managing and creating trade events for Australian food and wine brands in the UK and Europe. Food, wine, people what's not to love about this career path! After spending over a decade working in the marketing and events industry, I decided to take a leap into the unknown and launch my own business.

Sense and Forum materialised after some pretty heavy soul-searching. I was recovering from burnout and depression and as it so often does, life had thrown me one hell of a curve ball, (alright 2020?). I knew it was time to make a massive change in order to build the life my body and mind craved.

Sense and Forum was born so I could serve my dream clients with joy and flexibility. A brand that felt undeniably true to my values in life. This is my way of helping startups and tech companies level up their communities and maximise their brand's potential with a bold community strategy.

My mission is to cultivate authentic connections, champion diversity and inclusion, and expertly manage communities for human-centered brands.

What have been the main challenges of your career?

I faced a significant challenge in my career when I was burned out and depressed by a corporate career that did not serve my mind, body and soul (Raise your hand if you are with me).

This challenge in my career was a blessing that led me to create my own business, Sense and Forum and to build a brand that aligns with my values and energy.

Today, my new but exciting challenge is to re-establish my place in the working world after having a baby and becoming a mum. I am very grateful that I built a strong community of support before my maternity leave and am excited to get back out there.

What has helped you develop yourself as a community professional?

Listening to people in the communities I work in.

What's your favourite community platform?

Circle.

What's one single strategy that you may suggest to increase value for the people in your community?

People talk to people, not content. So ask questions, engage with posts, tag others to add to the conversation and encourage others to contribute.

What is “community” for you?

To me, community is about providing a space where there is a harmony of celebration and support, fostering of genuine connections, creative solutions, and a foundation of open, human-to-human communication.

What would you recommend to those just starting into community management?

You will play many roles but the most important ones are to be a listener, teacher, advocate and learner.
